The U.S. Navy method estimates body fat percentage from a few simple circumference measurements, without special equipment. It's a practical approximation, not as precise as clinical methods like DEXA scans.
For men, body fat % is estimated from neck, waist, and height measurements. For women, hip circumference is also included. The formula uses logarithms of these circumference differences, developed and validated by U.S. Navy researchers.
A man who is 175 cm tall with a 38 cm neck and 85 cm waist has an estimated body fat percentage of around 15%, which typically falls in the fitness-to-average range.
It’s generally within 3–4% of more precise methods like DEXA for most people, making it a useful and accessible estimate rather than a diagnostic measurement.
Body fat distribution differs by sex, so the Navy method adds a hip measurement for women to improve accuracy.
Healthy ranges vary by age and sex, but commonly cited ranges are roughly 10–20% for men and 18–28% for women, with athletes often falling below these ranges.
